Who we are

Comments
A comment left here stores what you typed into the form, plus the commenter’s IP address and browser user agent, which helps us catch spam.
To check whether you use Gravatar, we may send that service a hash, an anonymized string built from your email address. Gravatar explains how it handles data at https://automattic.com/privacy/. Once we approve a comment, anyone reading it can see your profile picture next to it.
Media
Before you upload a photo here, strip out any embedded location data (EXIF GPS). Anyone browsing the site can download an image and read the location stored in it.
Cookies
When you comment, you can choose to have cookies remember your name, email address and website. That way the form is already filled in the next time you post. These cookies expire after one year.
Opening our login page sets a short-lived cookie that only checks whether your browser takes cookies. It holds nothing personal and disappears once you close the browser.
Logging in adds a few more cookies: some keep you signed in, others remember your screen layout. The sign-in ones expire in two days and the screen ones in a year. Check "Remember Me" and you stay logged in for two weeks instead. Log out and those login cookies are deleted.
Editing or publishing an article stores one more cookie in your browser. All it holds is the post ID you just worked on, nothing personal. It expires after 1 day.
Embedded content from other websites
Some articles here carry content embedded from other sites, like videos, images or articles. That content works just as it would if you opened the source site yourself.
Those sites can gather data about you, set cookies, add their own third-party tracking and watch how you use the embedded item, including when you have an account with them and are signed in.
Who we share your data with
Request a password reset and your IP address goes out in that email.
How long we retain your data
Comments and their metadata stay on file with no end date. That way the site recognizes your next comments and approves them on its own, without a stop in the moderation queue.
If you register here (where that is offered), we keep the personal details you put in your profile. You can view, change or delete them anytime, but your username can’t be changed. Site admins can view and edit them too.
What rights you have over your data
Account holders and commenters can ask us for an export of the personal data we keep on them, including anything they gave us. You can also ask us to delete that data, except what we must hold onto for administrative, legal or security reasons.
Where your data is sent
An automated spam filter may screen comments from visitors.
